Research Experience

1/2009- Present Dynamic Simulation on Reliability of Urban Water Distribution Systems
This project is funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (No. 50878140). I’m the major participant of the project who is in charge of establishing a practical reliability assessment model for WDS and setting up the hydraulic model of water distribution system with EPANET 2.0. At the early stage of the project, lots of literatures were reviewed and a framework of hydraulic reliability assessment for WDS based on Monte-Carlo stochastic simulation was proposed.
3/2009-9/2009

Pressure Management and DMA Implement for Water Pipe Networks in Tanggu
This project aimed to aid the Tanggu Water Utility to find an effective way to reduce the non-revenue water. Four pilot areas were chosen for pressure management and DMA implement. My work was concentrated on organization of the field test, data collection and processing. Also simulation on water distribution system with pressure management scheme was conducted.

8/2008-6/2009

Research on Optimization Planning of Water Supply System in Tianjin City
This project was aimed to propose an optimized planning scheme of the regional water supply system in Tianjin City, where my master thesis was originated. A four-stage framework for optimal planning of regional water distribution systems (RWDS) was developed. Linked to EPANET as the hydraulic engine, the shuffled frog-leap algorithm was adopted to solve the diameter optimization problem of RWDS. The framework was successfully implemented to guide the planning of the water distribution system in Tianjin City.

10/2008-3/2009

Vulnerability and Risk Assessment of Water Supply System in Tianjin City
I was engaged in this project to develop a practical and rational model for vulnerability assessment of water distribution systems. Monte-Carlo stochastic simulation was adopted in the model to randomly generate bulk and wall reaction coefficients. With employing the EPANET toolkit as the hydraulic and water quality solver, the model can identify the vulnerable zones and calculate the vulnerability index of each junction and the entire system.

3/2008-8/2008

Evaluation and Planning of Water Supply Networks for TEDA Water Utility
This project was consisted with two parts: (1) evaluate the performance of water distribution system in Tianjin Economical Development Area (TEDA); (2) propose schemes for network expansion based on the evaluation result. As a major participant, I took part in all the process of the project including field test of water demand pattern and pump curve, setting up network model and simulation the performance of TEDA network with EPANET 2.0.

9/2007-12/2008

Development of GIS for Reclaimed Water Distribution System in Tianjin City
This project was aimed to establish a web GIS based management information system for the reclaimed water distribution system in Tianjin City. My work focused on developing a subsystem of forecasting the reclaimed water demand in the future days or months. Several forecasting methods including time series techniques, grey-forecasting model and BP neural network model were employed for the demand forecasting. All these methods were programmed and deployed to dynamic link library (DLL) files with MATLAB.

1/2006-1/2007

Optimization of Water Distribution Systems with Genetic Algorithm
This project aimed to find an optimal diameter combination with least investment and operating cost of water distribution systems. Basic genetic algorithm was adopted as the optimization technique to search for the global optimal solution. I was joined the team to utilize Delphi 7.0 to program and deploy desktop application integrated with genetic algorithm and hydraulic computation engine for water distribution systems.

1/2005-12/2005

Development of Emergency Response System for Water Supply Networks
This project was a subsystem of “Digital Urban Water Supply System” which was funded by National "Tenth Five-Year" Key Scientific and Technological Research Programs of China. I was engaged to design a program to find the best close valve scheme while water supply networks encountering pipe burst. Dijkstra algorithm was introduced to search for the closest valves to the burst point. Also the program was programmed with Delphi 7.0.

Software Development

DXF2EPANET Importing the complicated data of water distribution system into modeling software is always a tedious job for both researchers and practitioners. In order to simplify the input process, DXF2EPANET was developed for importing drawing exchange format (DXF) of distribution networks into EPANET model. Most parameters of pipe and junction, such as pipe length, diameter and junction coordinate, can be identified and saved into the EPANET input format file.
EPANET PLUS EPANET PLUS was a software package designed for exporting simulation results of EPANET into drawing exchange format (DXF) which AutoCAD can open directly. Based on the open source code of EPANET 2.0, the application with several new features added was compiled with Delphi 7.0. Also a few bugs of original EPANET were fixed, such as dislocation of flow arrow and exporting error INP file.
Excel-EPANET

Excel-EPANET provides a user interface in Excel to conduct simulation of water distribution systems (WDS). The program was written with Visual Basic for Application (VBA) linked to the EPANET toolkit. With reading the INP file, all the parameters of components in WDS model would list in the worksheets of Excel, so the user can easily modify the data and conduct a new simulation.
